Earth's Healing Touch: Grounding, Negative Ions, & Cancer

I wanted to find a way to create a deeper connection with my followers and provide more insights into the content I share on other platforms. I'm excited to give you all a closer, more personal look into my world—sharing insights from my life, my research, and work.

In a world that runs on artificial light, screens, and endless stimulation, it’s easy to forget that our bodies are designed for nature. We evolved with the rhythms of sunlight, fresh air, living soil, etc. We aren’t separate from nature, we are nature. There are real physiological reasons why being outdoors has a calming and healing effect on us.

Unfortunately, many aspects of modern life has separated us from nature. Most people spend their days indoors, under artificial light, and disconnected from the earth. We see the effects: poor sleep, chronic stress, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and mood issues. Our biology hasn’t changed, but our environment has. So, reconnecting with nature is a way to restore the conditions our bodies recognize. I always tell patients nature is a powerful force for healing.

In the summer the longer days and warmer weather make it easier to get outside and connect to the earth: walking in the grass, getting sun, hiking, ocean dips, etc. I am very grateful to live near the beach, so I make it a ritual to walk barefoot almost every day. 💛

What is grounding?

Grounding, or “earthing,” refers to the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface: walking barefoot on grass, swimming in natural bodies of water, or lying on the ground.

Research shows that grounding restores our bodies, even in small doses:

1. Grounding reduces inflammation.

Thermal images, of a patient with pain in the area of both knees, were taken a half-hour apart: before (left) and after Earthing (right). Tissue damage generates heat, represented by the hot colors on the left. The difference shows a clear and rapid resolution of inflammation: less red = less inflammation.

2. Grounding lowers cortisol.

3. Grounding improves circulation.

The right column shows red blood cells after grounding. They appear more separated, round, and evenly dispersed, which indicates better blood flow and oxygen transport.

The science behind grounding:

The Earth maintains a constant reservoir of free electrons, which are negatively charged particles. Because the human body can accumulate positive charges, grounding provides a natural means of electrical balancing.

Our cells can lose electrons when they are under cellular stress. For example, exposure to radiation, pollution, and certain chemicals, chronic inflammation, and aging can cause oxidative stress, or the loss of electrons.

Positive ions, also commonly referred to as free radicals, are molecules that have lost one or more electrons. These ions are invisible, but harmful to our cells because they ‘steal’ electrons from the body to neutralize their charge. This ultimately harms cells and can result in changes that lead to the development of cancer. Some of these include:

  • DNA damage

  • Protein damage

  • Cellular dysfunction

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction

  • Cell death

Conversely, negative ions are atoms or molecules with extra negatively charged electrons, meaning they contain more electrons than protons. These ions can donate electrons to cells.

When the skin contacts the Earth, these free electrons flow into the body and act as antioxidants. Inflammation and oxidative stress, central features of nearly every chronic disease, are often driven by these unpaired electrons. By supplying a steady flow of free electrons, grounding helps reduce this molecular instability.

Negative ions are abundant in nature, especially around waterfalls, on the ocean surf, at the beach, and in mountains and forests. When water molecules in these environments are agitated, such as by the crashing of waves or the movement of air through trees, they can release negative ions into the air. These negative ions are created when an atom or molecule gains an extra electron, giving it a negative electrical charge.

Sources of positive ions:

  • WIFI

  • Cellular devices

  • Air pollution

  • Microwaves

  • Toxic chemicals

  • Fluorescent lights

Sources of negative ions:

  • Waterfalls

  • Beaches

  • Ocean surf

  • Forests

  • Mountains

  • Rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, etc.

  • Thunderstorms & rainfall

  • Water fountains

Negative ions can:

  • Purify air: Negative ions are known to attract and bind with airborne particles like dust, pollen, mold spores, and bacteria. This process causes these particles to become heavier and eventually fall out of the air, leading to cleaner and fresher air.

  • Reduce inflammation: Negative ions can act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals in the body that contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress.

  • Improve cellular function: Negative ions may enhance the absorption of oxygen by cells, leading to improved cellular respiration and energy production.

  • Improve blood flow: Negative ions have been associated with improved blood flow and microcirculation, ensuring efficient delivery of nutrients and oxygen to cells and removal of waste products.

  • Reduce stress: Being in environments rich in negative ions, such as near waterfalls or in forests, is often linked to reduced stress levels and feelings of calmness. This effect is sometimes referred to as "negative ion therapy" or "forest bathing."

Negative ions and cancer:

Because these ions help mitigate damage and inflammation, they are especially helpful for cancer. A study published in Cancer Letters found that negative ions “significantly enhanced the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells, and significantly decreased the incidence of cancer and inhibited tumor growth. Anti-tumor effects were attributed to enhancement of natural killer cell activity.” Authors concluded that negative ions inhibit carcinogenesis, suppress tumor growth, and improve cachexia.

Some ways to increase exposure to negative ions:

  • Walk barefoot outside in grass

  • Take dips in the ocean

  • Go for mountain hikes

  • Spend time outside after thunderstorms

  • Take walks in forests

Grounding is free medicine. It’s one of the best ways to regulate the nervous system, lower inflammation, and restore balance at the cellular level. There’s plenty of science to prove this, but it’s also something we instinctively feel. Reconnecting is returning to the conditions our bodies were designed for. 🌎🤍
