Making America Healthy Starts With You🤍

This past week, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was chosen as the secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services. He has been one of the most outspoken individuals on public health, environmental toxins, and systemic failures that have allowed chronic disease to skyrocket.

RFK Jr. has gone up against an entire establishment, challenging industries, and institutions that prioritize profit over health. He has devoted his life to exposing the dangers of pollutants and advocating for medical freedom and transparency. And his mission has always been rooted in protecting the most vulnerable.

(To learn more about his work you can visit his website here.)

RFK Jr.’s appointment signals a bold step toward reshaping health policy to prioritize prevention, accountability, and the health of future generations.

No matter party or politics, I am hopeful that this new administration can bring meaningful change. This is the first time these conversations have come to the forefront—like mothers advocating for their children’s health at Kellogg’s, Drs. Calley and Casey Means discussing healthcare in the US on the Joe Rogan Podcast, even RFK pushing for McDonald’s to use tallow again, etc. Its extremely encouraging.

We all want to live in a better world—where healthy foods are more accessible and toxins aren’t lurking at every turn. Sometimes it can feel like an uphill battle, and there is no question that there are a lot of forces that are working to make us sick and unhealthy (unknowingly or not). For a long time, we have outsourced our health to others—government agencies, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, big corporations—and we’ve only continued to get sicker.

Despite these exciting updates, understand that your health ultimately lies in your own hands. In a world where the medical industry dominates, it’s a rebellious act to advocate for yourself. The majority of people are sick today and if we want to avoid this, it means we cannot live like most people. We can’t trust others to heal us or make us healthy, and we can’t expect anyone to come and save us. No one else is in control of how you eat or live except for you. Making America healthy starts with you.

Health is a prerequisite for anything you want to achieve.

And don’t underestimate your ability to initiate change. When you improve your health you impact everyone around you. When our bodies are functioning properly, we have the energy to fulfill our purpose. We gain energy to help those around us. We improve the lives of our children and their future children. Every choice causes a ripple effect, and making your body as strong, healthy, and resilient as possible is the best gift you can give to yourself and to the world.

Some Tips on How to Start Improving Your Health:🍎

There is so much information out there and much of it can be conflicting. I really believe that health should be intuitive—It should come naturally to us and we should not need a degree to understand how to live a healthy life. But, once we understand what is happening in our world, healthcare system, and food supply we can start to make proactive changes. Here’s where I would start:

Avoid seed oils. Few things are more important than what you are putting in your body. Dialing in nutrition is the first step to improving health. It’s extremely important to avoid seed oils and fats that cause unnecessary oxidative stress and cell damage. Unfortunately, they are ubiquitous in our food supply, so it can take some extra effort to avoid them—checking ingredient labels, asking restaurants if they can cook your meal in butter, cooking your own meals, etc. I think it’s worth it to take a few extra steps to avoid—inflammation caused by seed oils is linked to countless chronic diseases.

Meat, dairy, and fruit. A diet consisting primarily of fruit, milk, vegetables, and meat is the easiest way to eat for nutrient density. Some people in the health world have turned eating into a clinical, dogmatic, numbers-driven act. They’re focused on hitting macros, tracking calories, avoiding entire food groups, etc., and some of us have forgotten that eating is also a spiritual experience. It’s a psychological feedback loop that determines mental, hormonal, and bodily composition. I believe eating should be pleasurable because food nourishes our body and our spirit. Our spirit can detect the quality of what we eat too, so I always advocate for organic produce and grass-fed, pasture-raised animal products.

Some tips:

  1. The best way to keep costs down is to keep it simple and buy in bulk

  2. Butcher Box always has deals

  3. Farmer’s markets sometimes have less expensive, in-season produce

  4. Befriend butchers and farmers

  5. Recognize that spending money on food is investing in your health and life

Sunlight. There is a reason sunlight feels so good on our skin—the body knows we need it. Sunlight is light therapy for free. Reasonable sun exposure (avoiding burns) everyday is so important for your sleep and hormones. It’s also important for our psyche that we make peace with our environment. There’s no need to slather on toxic chemical sunscreens or hide from the sun—we were designed to live under it.

Movement for fun. Exercise is essential. It’s important to push ourselves and see what the body is capable of. This is a fundamental human experience. However, I do not believe everyone needs to be killing themselves in the gym every day or stressing out about workout routines. We were designed to move every day. We need to get our blood and lymph flowing. But it should be enjoyable—trying a pilates or weights class, paddle boarding, going for a swim, hiking in nature. It should be fun. It should be an entire experience.

Natural desiccated thyroid. Thyroid health is fundamental to everything in our body. Every cell needs thyroid hormones to function properly. Many people have low thyroid function today—there are countless drivers, but one interesting thing to consider is that our ancestors ate the thyroid glands of animals, a natural source of thyroid hormones. This suggests that hypothyroidism might not just be from our body’s inability to produce enough hormones. Previous generations were often exposed to exogenous thyroid hormones through meat:

“Not many know this but thyroid gland used to actually be present in ground meat and hamburgers in the U.S. due to a practice called “gullet trimming” which involved grinding the neck of slaughtered animals. This was up until the 1980s when the USDA created regulations which banned this practice. Your grandparents we unknowingly supplementing thyroid hormones anytime they ate a hamburger.” - @serotoninskep on X.

Natural desiccated thyroid is a natural alternative to synthetic thyroid hormones and contains the active thyroid hormone (T3) unlike Synthroid. Supplementing can improve thyroid levels, metabolic rate, and cell function.

Drinking only when thirsty. A tiger in the wild does not guzzle water because someone online told it to, it only drinks when it is thirsty. The same should apply to us. The body is always telling us what we need— it is a masterpiece that is often more intelligent than us—sometimes it’s just about following its cues.

Glycine. Glycine is an anti-inflammatory amino acid and neurotransmitter. It supports the production of glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant, protecting against cellular damage. It also is often used to enhance sleep quality, reduce anxiety, and improve cognitive function. Before modern food processing, many people ate adequate glycine through diet—they consumed the entire animal—connective tissue, tendons, etc., not just muscle meats. If you are eating a lot of muscle meat, supplementing with glycine or consuming meat with collagen or gelatin can balance the inflammatory amino acids in the blood stream. Some sources of glycine:

  1. Collagen or gelatin

  2. Bone broth

  3. Eat meat off the bone

Sweating and sauna. If I were to make only one big health item purchase, it would be an infrared sauna (I like Higher Dose, use code CONNEALYMD). Today we’re swimming in a sea of toxicity, but our skin is a powerful detoxifier. Sauna use has been demonstrated to promote the removal of endocrine disrupters like BPA, heavy metals, and other toxins. If you don’t want to buy a sauna, exercising to sweat or hot baths can also be really helpful.

Magnesium spray for sleep. Sleep is so important and a lot of people struggle to get enough. Topical magnesium is a gentler, natural way to promote sleep rather than Tylenol PM or sleeping pills. Applying it directly to the skin bypasses the digestive system, ensuring efficient absorption into the body where it can relax muscles and calm the nervous system. It also doesn’t make you drowsy like some over the counter options.

Progesterone and pregnenolone. These hormones are highly protective, antiaging, and anticancer. They help to counter the effects of estrogen, which is an extremely prevalent driver of disease in our country. To learn more, you can read Pregnenolone and Men’s Health and visit Raena’s Instagram page for tons of information.

Sea salt and electrolytes. Many people are mineral deficient today. A lot of this has to do with the quality of our soil, messaging around sodium intake, and processed foods. High quality salt and electrolytes help replenish minerals and keep stress hormones like cortisol low. Believe it or not, I think many people are under eating sodium.

Love and family. It goes without saying, but love and family can profoundly transform our health. Healing usually involves choosing love—towards others and ourselves—where we have previously neglected. Sometimes becoming healthy again means giving ourselves love where others did not. And extending it to others is one of the best ways to inspire change the world. Remember, everything starts with you!
